Which code out of the NFL, NBA, MLB and NHL receives the most internet searches in the United States? The winner is… NFL.

The NFL is the most popular American sporting code online, according to Google. In second position is the NBA, third is occupied by MLB and bringing in the rear is the NHL, searched for just a sixth of what the NFL is. All that changes in Canada though who regard NHL as the best sporting code.

In terms of individual cities, Pittsburgh is the staunchest supporters of the NFL, San Antonio the biggest followers of the NBA, Cambridge comprises the most fans of MLB and Buffalo the most passionate about the NHL.

It must be noted that this trend only takes into account the abbreviation of each code and does not include other search terms such as basketball, football, baseball or hockey.
